The factors that give rise to such condensation in dwellings include overcrowding, poor thermal performance of the wall and roof construction, inadequate ventilation, the use of paraffin or gas (or both) heating for cooking and the indoor washing and drying of laundry. All of these factors contribute to the generation of excessive water vapour in the indoor atmosphere, which condenses on walls and ceilings when the surface temperature falls below the dew point. Such moisture might also be transferred into building cavities by air movement where, in turn, it would condense on cold surfaces. Preventative measures that can be taken include improving the thermal performance of the building and the provision of effective vapour barriers in appropriate positions so as to prevent rotting of timber studs or timber roof truss components, or corrosion of steel studs and wall ties.
