The Remote IO Single Channel Drop Adapter transfers data bi
directionally between the IO modules installed in the same Remote IO
backplane and the Remote IO Head module that is installed in the CPU
backplane. A coaxial cable network is used to interconnect the RIO
head module and one or more RIO drop adapters.
RIO is based on a coaxial cabling scheme that provides long distance
capability up to 5 km (16,400 ft) with Coaxial cable or longer with
optional fiberoptic cable. It is a high performance network operating at
1.544 Mbits/s for high IO data throughput.
The RIO cable system consists of a linear trunk line, with line taps and
drop cables running to each remote drop. Up to 31 remote drops can
be configured. Each drop can support up to 128 I/O words (64 words in
and 64 words out).
As an option, modules can be ordered with a conformal coating applied
to protect the internal circuitry from corrosive gases such as Chlorine,
Nitric Oxide, Hydrogen Sulfide and Sulfur Dioxide.
